Wacky Facts From 20 Years of Chunk!

It’s crazy to think Chunk of Devon’s been going for 20 whole years now… but some of these facts are even CRAZIER!

Last time, we took a trip down memory lane and looked back at the history of Chunk of Devon.

This time, we're celebrating our 20th birthday a little differently…

We've dug through the numbers, crunched a few figures and uncovered some slightly ridiculous facts from two decades of pie making.

Some are impressive, others are just plain surprising!

So….

We've Made Over 20 Million Pies & Pasties!

That's right.

Around 20 million pies and pasties have rolled out of our Devon bakeries over the last 20 years. If you lined them up end to end, they'd stretch for roughly 2,900 kilometres.

That's enough pastry to get you from Devon to the Canary Islands on holiday!!

Or nearly all the way to Moscow! (Not that we'd recommend delivering them by hand)

We've Used Nearly 3 Million Kilos of Pastry

Over the years we've worked our way through almost 3 million kilos of pastry.

That's around 3,000 tonnes.

For context, that's roughly the weight of 60 fully loaded EasyJet aircrafts.

Which explains why our bakers have very strong arms.

1.5 Million Kilos of Flour

We've used approximately 1.5 million kilos of flour – AKA around one million supermarket bags of flour!!

Imagine carrying those home after a weekly shop.

We'll stick to pallets thank you very much!

Enough Butter to Make a Dietitian Nervous...

Over the last 20 years we've worked through around 750,000 kilos of butter and fats.

Laid end to end as standard butter blocks, they'd stretch for hundreds of miles!

A beautiful sight, admittedly. But a practical one? Probably not.

We've Crimped Over 150 Million Times

Every Chunk pasty is hand-crimped.

With around 15 crimps per pasty, we've created over 150 million individual crimps since 2006.

If you laid those crimps end to end, they'd stretch roughly 2,500 kilometres. That's about the distance from London to Istanbul.

Want a more local comparison? Those same crimps would go around Dartmoor around 25 times.

Which feels much more Chunk.

Our Vans Have Driven Millions of Miles

Over the years, Chunk vans have clocked up more than 3 million miles.

That’s like driving to the moon and back around eight times!! Although we're fairly certain the roads are slightly better in Devon.

We've Won More Than 350 Awards

The one we're most proud of...

Over the last 20 years Chunk has picked up more than 350 awards! Along the way we've been crowned:

🏆 Multiple Great Taste Award winners

🏆 Food Drink Devon winners

It's nice to know we're not the only ones who enjoy a good pie!! (Check out our awards wall for more info!)

We've Supplied Some Pretty Famous Places

Over the years our pies and pasties have popped up in some surprising places.

We've supplied everyone from Harrods and Selfridges to Wembley Stadium, Whole Foods, Wimbledon, Glastonbury Festival and the Exeter Chiefs.

Not bad for a bakery that started in a small Devon town.

We've Appeared on TV

Chunk has popped up on television screens more times than we can remember.

From local TV and radio to national appearances on QVC, we've somehow managed to talk about pies for twenty years without getting bored!!

Some Chunk Hunks Have Been With Us Since The Beginning

Some of our longest-serving Hunks have racked up decades of service between them.

Pasty-queens Paula and Jackie, and King-of-the-kitchen Geoff alone account for more than 59 years at Chunk!!

Add Simon and Suzi into the mix and that's a lot of pastry experience under one roof!

Twenty Years Later...

When we started Chunk back in 2006, we never imagined we'd be sat here twenty years later talking about millions of pies, thousands of tonnes of pastry and hundreds of awards.

It's been a brilliant journey so far!

There have been challenges, triumphs, lessons learned and more early mornings than we'd care to remember. But through it all, one thing has remained the same: making proper food that people genuinely enjoy eating!

To every customer who's bought a pie, every stockist who's backed us, and every member of the Chunk team who's helped make it happen, thank you.
