The Story Of Hoisin Duck!

The Story Of Hoisin Duck!

...From Chinese Pancakes to Chunk Pastry! 🦆

Some flavour combinations just work…

Cheese and onion. Steak and ale. Duck and hoisin sauce.

So a couple of years ago, we started wondering… if hoisin sauce and duck works this well in pancakes, why not in a pie?

And thus, the Duckin’ Pie was born!!

So… What Is Hoisin Duck?

Hoisin duck is a hugely popular Chinese-inspired dish made here in the UK!

It’s very popular in London Chinatown today, taking rich duck, usually roasted or pan-fried, coated in glossy hoisin sauce and served with pancakes, cucumber and spring onion.

It’s all about balance. Sweet and savoury… salty and rich…. Sticky and crispy!

Basically, it’s mouthfuls of indulgent flavour that makes you immediately go back for another bite!

The sauce itself is made mainly from soybeans, garlic, vinegar, sugar and spices. Thick, dark, and packed with umami flavour. That’s why it has that classic British Chinese-takeaway sweetness to it.

And while hoisin sauce is often linked to duck dishes around the world now, it actually has a long history in Chinese cuisine, namely Cantonese cooking.

Over the years it’s been popular in a range of stir fries, marinades, glazing meats and dipping sauces we still find scrummy today!

In short: it’s bold stuff. Which sounded very Chunk to us.

Why It Works So Well in a Pie

Think about it…

Rich shredded duck, sticky savoury sauce, stir fried veggies, all wrapped up in golden pastry!

We took the takeaway flavours us Brits already love, and popped it in a pie (proper East meets West(country) stuff as we like to say!)

The pie-fest result is something that just feels familiar, but also completely different to anything else in our pie range. A proper comfort-food mashup!!

A Takeaway Favourite… Reimagined

That’s the fun of the Duckin’ Pie.

It takes one of those classic Friday-night takeaway flavours and turns it into something you can stick in the oven at home and eat straight from the plate (or straight from the tray if nobody’s watching).

And judging by how often people ask for it to come back… we’re clearly not the only ones who thought it was a good idea.
